About Teacher Karen (Pre 3's)
In Pre-3s, the children are natural scientists - Teacher Karen’s top priority is creating engaging, multi-sensory experiences for them to explore. She loves observing the 2 year old child playing and exploring in the coop classroom, doing the work of play. She also knows A LOT of songs.
“Almost immediately upon moving to Seattle, I learned about cooperative preschool. Co-op became my village. In it, I have found a place for me to be a parent and an educator, an amazing group of peers for myself and my children, and a boundless amount of resources through the experiences of others. I am still a coop parent, and now a teacher as well.”
Helping children learn their emotions, find their independence and foster their interests through a wide variety of experiences is the backbone of our Pre-3s program. Teacher Karen creates the environment for the children and engages them in rich language to enhance their learning.. She uses routine to create predictability which allows the children to thrive.
Karen has a BS in Kinesiology from San Francisco State University where she focused on motor development and skill acquisition. She has taught preschool previously, and has also been a nanny, a retail manager, assistant director of an afterschool program, and an office manager at an indie video game company.
About Teacher Christine (3-5's)
Teacher Christine believes that preschool is a place for children of all backgrounds to come together and that play is how they learn best. In her classroom, children have many opportunities for creative and imaginative play. They engage in open-ended art, construction, and sewing projects. She encourages exploration and investigation in science and many other sensory experiences.
Christine has Bachelors degree from Western Washington University in Elementary Education and Interdisciplinary Child Development. She also holds a Masters Degree from the University of Washington in Language, Literacy and Culture. She has worked in a wide variety of classrooms from birth to high school, but loves preschool best.
Teacher Christine also has a background in theatre. She has found that being silly is a necessity when working with kids and is something her preschoolers really love!
Christine grew up on the Olympic Peninsula and lived in Bellingham before coming to Seattle nearly 12 years ago. She is a mom of two rowdy boys, and has enjoyed 5 years as a parent in co-op before coming to Meadowbrook.
About Teacher Jeanne (Pre-K)
Teacher Jeanne has been involved in co-op since 2006, both as a parent with her two kids, and as a teacher. She believes in a play based curriculum, loves child led play and is passionate about community building - cooperative preschool could not be a more perfect fit! Jeanne provides a safe and caring environment for the children while keeping things fabulously fun through art, stories, songs, imaginative play, field trips, outside play and circle time.
Jeanne comes to Meadowbrook with 6 years of experience in the classroom as a Teacher. She has taught every age in preschool but has a special place in her heart for the PreK age. “This age group can really dive into activities and have a greater depth of learning!” She helps prepare kids for kindergarten by exploring a variety of themes and activities throughout the school year that challenges students all through her play based curriculum.
Her classes consist of lots of free play for kids to explore and learn as well as circle times including lots of songs, games, movement and music. Her goal for the kids is to learn who they are, how to be a part of their community (whatever that is for them) and to begin to learn problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
Kindergarten readiness is one of the major goals in Teacher Jeanne’s PreK class. She works on problem solving, dealing with disappointment, empathy, and community building all through play. Pre-kindergarten skills are obtained through projects, small group activities, field trips and open choice child led play time.
Currently, Teacher Jeanne serves as the Latona Pre3s teacher, the Monday North Seattle Parent Infant class, and the Parent Infant teacher at the Phinney Co-op. She served as lead teacher for the Latona 3-5s for two years. Her time before that was spent at the Ingraham Pre3s co-op.
Additionally, she has been a Dragon Room Summer Programs teacher at the Phinney Co-op where she taught her Kids in the Kitchen summer camp to 4-6 year olds for several summers.
